63 People Arrested in Lagos for Illegal Street Trading and Crossing the Highway

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest of the suspects, adding that they had immediately been charged in court following the state’s environment management law.

Sixty-three persons were on Tuesday, March 19, arrested by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, for allegedly crossing the highway instead of using the pedestrian.

Those engaging in illegal street trading were also arrested by the authorities.

The state government had in February threatened to arrest and prosecute people crossing the major highways in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest of the suspects via his verified X handle on Monday, adding that they had immediately been charged in court following the state’s environment management law.

He wrote, “Earlier today, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (@LAGESCOfficial) operatives arrested 63 people for crossing the highway and illegal street trading.

“They have been taken to court for trial per the Lagos State Environmental Management Law 2017.”

The ministry had also recently intensified its campaign against street trading and ejecting roadside traders.
