Opera fans looking for another safe bet at the Metropolitan Opera this spring should check out Otto Schenk’s re-enactment of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale from 2006, on March 4 Premiere. The cast is the big news here. Powerful Italian baritone Ambrogio Maestri will make his Pasquale debut as Verdi’s Falstaff in the 2013 Met production protagonist. Captivating Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto makes her Metropolitan Opera debut as Norina.

Perhaps most exciting is the return of Mexican tenor Javier Camarena to the Metropolitan Opera to sing Ernesto. In the spring of 2014, Mr. Camarena Elvino brought melting tenderness, powerful voice and outstanding agility to Bellini’s “La Sonnambula”. A few weeks later he withdrew from Rossini’s opera Cinderella, to such applause that he repeated the majestic tenor aria “Si, ritrovarla io giuro”: this is the Metropolitan Rare example of encore in theater.

New Yorkers probably remember the great choral conductor Robert Shaw most clearly for his tremendous success over the past decade: Carnegie Hall’s annual series of seminars for choral professionals, each featuring Carnegie Music will end. They began in 1990 with intense rehearsals and a performance of Brahms’ German Requiem, which many in the industry are still talking about years later.

Accordingly, Carnegie Hall should celebrate Mr. Shaw’s 100th birthday on April 30 with a performance of the work by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Robert Spano. (This follows performances in Atlanta on April 14 and 16.) While Mr. Shaw is not known as an orchestral conductor, he served as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1988, and in 1967 Founded the choir in 1970 after founding an affiliated chamber choir in 1970, making it one of the best in the country.
