Cook County prosecutors dropped murder charges against a woman and her 14-year-old son who shot and killed a man during a brawl at a Sipplemans restaurant after video showed The man shot and killed a man at her son.

Jeremy Brown, 32, was murdered on June 18 on the Maxwell Street Express in the 11600 block of South Halsted Street, and Calicia, 35, Carlisia Hood and her son were charged with first-degree murder. Hood, who had a valid FOID card and a concealed carry permit at the time of the incident, was also charged with participating in a juvenile delinquency.

All charges against Hood and her son were dropped on Monday. Cook County Attorney Kim Fox said in a statement that the decision was based on “our ongoing review and new evidence.”

Fox’s office added: “Due to the facts, evidence and law, we cannot meet our burden of proof to prosecute these cases.”

Hours after the charges were dropped Monday morning, Hood was released from the Cook County Jail and hugged by his family. She declined to comment when she was released, but her lawyer and family said they were relieved she was home and that justice had finally been served.

Prosecutors have previously acknowledged that the shooting was captured on video. According to prosecutors, Hood was in line to receive food while her son waited in her car. Not long after, Brown walked into the restaurant.

During the altercation, Hood began texting her 14-year-old son, who was waiting outside in his car.

Surveillance video outside the restaurant showed the teen entering the restaurant, and cell phone video inside the store showed Brown Hood punching at least three times to the head and face.

Prosecutors said the teen pulled a gun from his hoodie and shot Brown in the back. Brown fled the restaurant, but the teenager followed him out. After Hood asked him to shoot and kill him, he fired more shots, prosecutors said.

He was shot twice in the back and later succumbed to his wounds. It was unclear why prosecutors decided to charge Hood and her son with murder in the shooting, even though their account of the shooting noted that Brown punched Hood before her son shot him. Prosecutors also acknowledged that the shooting was captured on video.

“You have the right to use deadly force to stop violence against another person, and that’s what happened in this case, and that’s what the prosecution dropped the case today,” said CBS 2 legal analyst Olf Miller. reason.”

She was held on $3 million bond after Hood was charged last week. Her son has been charged as a minor and will not be released on bond until the charges are dropped. Both are free now.
