A video showing a giant banana-eating frog the size of its owner’s head has been viewed more than 20 million times on TikTok. But according to its creators, it’s all down to the magic of this movie.

The video caused shock and surprise. The video, posted on TikTok on Thursday, shows videographer Lucas Peterson touching and feeding a giant amphibian named “Dumpy.”

But as the Minnesota-based content creator explained to CNN, Dumpy is a four-year-old Australian green tree frog that’s literally the size of a hand. Peterson edited the video in Adobe Premiere to make it appear larger.

Peterson said there was also “a lot of perspective tricks used” to give the video a realistic feel.

He said he hoped to spark debate about whether the video was authentic – and that the ambiguity would increase interest in its content. “It creates questions and more interactions and arguments about whether it’s true or not,” he said. He previously posted a similar clip of a video of an oversized frog.

Still, he was surprised by the massive reach of the Dumpy video that was amplified on Thursday. “I didn’t expect people to be so crazy about a giant frog,” he said.

Peterson explained that the video was edited from the original TikTok description, writing, “Its actual size is about 4-5 inches, blown up using VFX perspective tricks.” “I did it in Adobe Premiere All edits.” Yet his disclaimer was buried halfway through the video description — and as Peterson told CNN, copies of his original video without subtitles also began circulating on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, causing many viewers to The clip is believed to be authentic.

But Peterson said the video’s popularity gave him the opportunity to share information about his semi-aquatic pet. He maintains a “paludarium”, a closed glass container with water elements, which houses Dumpy and two salamanders.

“This opens the door to educating people about the greatness of tanks and amphibians,” he said. “It’s a niche hobby.”

He plans to post more about Dumpy and his other amphibians in the future. “Humpty Dumpty is still the same cute frog you see on screen, the only difference is that he’s been enlarged,” he said.

While you won’t have to be wary of oversized frogs anytime soon, you may want to pay attention to editing the next mind-boggling viral video you see.
