Wowow, Japan’s leading pay-TV
channel, will explore the backstory
of one of the most iconic characters
from the legendary anime
Yatterman in a nevw live-action spin-
off. The new series, titled “Doronjo,”
follows the beloved villain and how
she ends up being the opposite of
the Yatterman of the same name.

The 11-episode series, starring
popular Japanese actress Elaiza
Ikeda, will unveil “the shocking past
of the beautiful and shady heroine
Doronjo” on Wowow in October.

Originally premiering in Japan in
1977, Yatterman has been a cultural
icon ever since, with several sequels
and a live-action adaptation in 2009.

The movie even aired in several
countries outside of Japan,
including Spain, Italy, Poland and
other Asian countries that are
becoming global hits. In the series,
the titular hero is at constant feud
with the villainous Dorumbo gang,
who are trying to collect four skull
stones, which are said to reveal the
location of the world’s largest gold
mine when put together. Doronjo is
the leader of the gang, known for his
good looks, vanity and wit. Despite
her intelligence, she and the rest of
the Torombo gang never managed
to defeat Altman. Still, her portrayal
in the series has become an icon of
Japanese culture, playing a role
similar to Catwoman or Harley
Quinn in the anime world.
