Employees in the Department of Art and Design at Northeastern Illinois University are mourning the death of a friend and colleague who was killed in a bicycle accident Monday night.

The man killed in the crash has been identified as Northeastern Illinois University faculty member Don Heggemann.

“It’s still shocking,” said Kim Ambriz, the school’s director of art and design. “I feel really numb. I work with him every day. It’s a little hard not to see anyone there. We’re going to miss him.”

Colleagues met with the Hegman family on campus Wednesday.

They say he switched careers a decade ago after taking a ceramics course at university and never left. Heggemann worked as an assistant in the art and design department and most recently as an office clerk.

“Don was an amazing man,” said ceramics teacher Dubhe Carreno. “He was generous, he was kind, he was funny and he was cooperative. It’s unbelievable that something like this happened.”
