Davis was born on June 2, 1954, to Bob Davis and Evelyn Davis. He is the third of their five children. Bob and Evelyn were both alcoholics, and according to Davis’ attorney, Evelyn was a strict disciplinarian (he was said to have burned Davis’ hands when she caught him smoking). When Davis was eleven, his parents divorced. Davis and his siblings remained with their father, who was sometimes unwilling or unable to raise them, resulting in them having to bounce back and forth between other relatives.

Bob also remarried twice and gave Davis two stepmothers (whom he hated). Davis showed signs of antisocial personality since childhood (he was later diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder). He often killed stray animals, especially cats, which he burned alive, and dogs, which he slashed with the knife he carried. On October 12, 1973, 18-year-old Marlene Voris was found shot to death. Seven suicide notes were found at the crime scene. Some believe Davis, who was 19 at the time, murdered her in her home while she was hosting a party. Davis later admitted to a psychologist that her death affected him greatly (he even claimed he heard her voice in his head, telling him she wanted to be raped, robbed or assaulted).
