The walls and decor in 16-year-old Nadia’s room look like any other high school teenager. Her real name is not Nadia; Her identity is being withheld at the request of her family out of respect for her memory and privacy.
The wall next to the bed is covered with a beautiful painting; The bookshelf is filled with books, knick-knacks, and childhood photographs. Near the full-length mirror, a recent piece of art shows a printed photograph of a blue whale superimposed on a hand-painted background.
This girl is a talented artist, sister, daughter and friend. No one who knew her expected her to take her own life one morning in May. No one who knew her could have predicted what would be discovered after her death.
Almost immediately, her distraught brother Marty began going through her things for signs. I noticed an unusual pattern in the drawings and diary entries, which included a small sketch of a girl with a Russian name underneath.
An Internet search for the name revealed the story of Rina Palenkova, a 17-year-old girl who posted a “farewell” selfie before committing suicide in Russia in November 2015. The photo went viral on the Russian social network VK. com, the attention generated by her death led to the discovery of her alleged involvement in an online campaign known as “Blue Whale.”
Continuing his investigation, Marty remembers the image of a blue whale taped next to the mirror in his sister’s room. He flipped through his sketches and found several pages of whale drawings and magazine clippings with the words “I am a blue whale” pasted on them, along with drawings of self-mutilation, a suicidal statement with parting words, and a message written in Russian from Multiple Entries.
While Nadia’s family was investigating the connection to the Blue Whale, they discovered an online suicide challenge that supposedly started in Russia two years ago. Since then, suspected blue whale-inspired suicides have occurred in parts of Central Asia, Europe and South America. Nadia’s suicide appears to be the first in the United States to be influenced by this concept. The Washington Post reported on another teen suicide in Texas in early July that was suspected to be linked to blue whales.
The “game” was allegedly administered by online administrators and lasted for more than 50 days. Curators provide players with tasks to complete each day and require them to provide photographic evidence of each task’s completion and to keep their communications confidential.
One person who may be related to the blue whale is a 21-year-old psychology student named Philip Budeikin. He was arrested in November, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. Authorities at the St. Petersburg District Court confirmed in a press release that an open investigation into charges of “incitement to suicide” was underway. Budeikin admitted to creating the game and using the social network VK.com to encourage 15 to 17 teenagers to commit suicide, according to a news release from the investigative committee.
