U.S. To Place Visa Restrictions On Individuals Who Undermined Nigeria's Election
The United States of America has vowed to impose visa restrictions on individuals that undermined the just conducted Nigerian elections.
“The United States is deeply troubled by the disturbing acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression that took place during those polls in Lagos, Kano, and other states”. Wrote the U.S mission Nigeria on Twitter.
“The United States likewise will consider all available actions. including additional visa restrictions, on individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Nigeria”. The statement continued.
They also call on Nigerian authorities to hold accountable and bring to justice any individuals found to have ordered or carried out efforts to intimidate voters and suppress voting during the election process.
The United States joined other international observers in urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to improve voting processes. They are also charged to improve technical elements that experienced flaws in that voting round.
INEC declared APC’s Bola Tinubu as the president-elect. However, the announcement has been dragged to court by the Labour party candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
