Uruguay beats Canada on penalties to take third place in Copa America

Today the game for third and fourth place in the Copa América was held between Uruguay and Canada.

The game was preceded by the painful experiences of both teams. While the Americans did not have a good day against Argentina, the CharrĂșas could not, with an extra player for most of the game, score against a solid Colombian team.

The game started with both teams very speculative, calculating the pace of the game. As the minutes passed, Uruguay would dominate.

In the 8th minute, the South Americans took the lead. Fede Valverde took a corner kick, one of his teammates headed it and the ball ended up with Rodrigo Betancur’s back to goal. The midfielder stepped on the ball and turned around to take a shot that went over the Canadian goalkeeper, as it went over the top of the goal.

From there the American team began to grow little by little, the opportunities were more in the Uruguayan area.

Similarly, from a corner kick, a loose ball reached Ismaël Koné , but despite the fact that he had his back to Sergio Rochet, he waited for the ball in the air, made a feint of a bicycle kick and made a hat trick over his rivals. The move was so effective that it fooled the Uruguayans.

By the second half, the back-and-forth became a constant , until at 90′ the Canadians’ hopes began to re-emerge. KonĂ© got past the midfield line without any problem, made room with his right foot and generated a strong shot outside the area, Rochet blocked the ball in the center of the area, there was Jonathan David, who with a shot without much power managed to put the ball in and put his team ahead.

Uruguay, nervous, went on the attack in search of a goal. They had more than just pride at stake.

Finally, in a counterattack between José María Giménez and Luis Suårez , the gunslinger came on in the 93rd minute to push the ball in and extend the match until penalty shoot-outs.

Uruguay did not miss any of their attempts from the penalty spot and the Canadians made mistakes through Ismaël Koné and Alphonso Davies.

The midfielder made a weak shot , while the Bayern Munich star made a ‘panenka’ that ended up hitting the crossbar.

Despite this, the participation of the Concacaf team in the tournament is notable.
