Some of the temporary workers who worked for the 2023 election in Nigeria complained about not being paid their allowances for the work they did.

The workers who said they have a large number across the country asked the Electoral Commission, INEC to help pay them their rights.

In the months of February and March of 2023, the presidential, parliamentary and governor elections were held in Nigeria.

One of these temporary workers from Kano state told the BBC that in the state alone there are 80 of his colleagues who have not been paid.

“We don’t understand what is happening, among us there are those who have not been paid the allowance for the work of the presidential election and there are some who are for the governors who have not been paid.

Some tried to find out what was going on but they were told that the problem affects all people whose bank account numbers start with “0” and they got the problem;

However, some owners of such accounts have done the work of the presidential election and they have been paid,” according to the temporary employee of INEC.

He added that they do not understand how this problem affects the payment of their rights.

Another temporary worker who still said that he has not received the money for his work, said that in the 2019 election, there are others who have been affected by the same problem and they have not been paid yet.

“There are some of my friends who I know have not received their money since the 2019 election, so we are also afraid that our money will be stuck,” said the young man.

A young woman who worked for the temporary election said that she did not even get the training money that was given for the work she did for the election of the governor and the president.

The BBC contacted the head of the INEC Kano state branch, Ambassador Abdul Zango on this issue and he said that only a few people were affected by the problem.

“We have paid 96 percent of their money, the remaining 4 percent that have not been paid, they have problems with their accounts.

Some did not give their bank account numbers, except those of their friends or relatives, and since there is a payment machine, if the name of the bank account does not match the name of the person who did the election, the money will not be paid. they will not enter,” said Ambassador Abdul.

He also added that the election commission will not be happy even if one person is not paid for his work.

“Anyone who has not been paid should submit his complaint to the Electoral Commission so that his name is included in the database that is being collected because we have set up a committee that will resolve this problem by the end of May this year 2023.

All those who the BBC spoke to asked the INEC electoral commission to pay them their dues because according to them they worked to sell their lives.

Apart from Kano state, there are other workers from many Nigerian states who said that they have not been paid yet.
