Federal Government Will Remove Fuel Subsidy Before Buhari Tenure Ends - Finance Minister

Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, has said the federal government would remove the controversial petrol subsidy before the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure on May 29, 2023.

She made this stance while speaking during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of VON in Abuja.

Ahmed attributed the delay in the removal of the subsidy, as provided for in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, to the 2023 general election and the forthcoming national population census.

However, the federal government has not disclosed how it intended to mitigate the effect of the proposed fuel subsidy removal on the citizens.

“For over a year plus now, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has been leading a committee working on this and the National Economic Council also has a committee that has also been working on this”. Said Clement Agba, Minister of state for budget and planning.

“So the stage that we are in now is how to finalise the suggestions that have come out from both the federal government and the governors side”. He stated.
